To those who walked with us in prayer and encouragement...
Our hearts are so deeply broken, and our lives will never be the same. John was a happy, tender, kind, courageous and honorable husband, father, son, brother, grandson, uncle, friend…and so much more! He has always provided comfort to our family as well as plenty of fun and laughs. John truly loved being an officer, and he would do it all over again - with no regrets. We will miss him dearly until we see him again in Heaven. We know this world is not our home, but this pain still hurts incredibly deep to the core. Our family is broken, but we will rejoice in sweet precious memories and the assurance that John is beside the Lord who loves him more than we ever could. John loved and was dearly loved – that is his legacy we will carry. Throughout the past week of battles, victories, joys, trials and prayers, the loving kindness and support has been amazingly beautiful and has forever humbled our family. If acts of kindness and love could have saved him, he would undoubtedly still be here with us. We do not understand, but we will learn to accept. John was a good man who lived a good life, so we consider our family blessed. He will continue to forever warm our heart and souls.

Party in the ICU...
He had a good, stable, uneventful night despite the party. In the morning rounds we got good information. Today he is scheduled to go back to the OR to clean out his arm and get it set. Depending on his condition they may or may not close his abdomen. He has lost approx 3 liters of fluid over night which is a really good thing. His brain pressure is in the normal range and that is a really big deal. They are decreasing his reliance on the ventilator in small increments but slow and steady is the name of the game we want to play. He is no longer acidic and despite his heart being very bruised it is functioning well. His lungs are good - not great but good. His team continues to be one step ahead on the what if game plan. So they will be watching his lungs closely. His platelets are low - 47, for those who like details. He is having plasma again for breakfast to help get that number higher. He is off sedation meds and they are even backing off his pain meds. That is not to torture him but to allow them to better evaluate his condition. In a twisted way we were excited to hear he gagged this morning when they were inserting his feeding tube. Those sort of natural reflexes are what we want. They give us a peek into his future and his potential recovery. We are not out of the woods but we are not lost in the deep deep deep woods like we were. I was hoping to ditch the "critical" label but he will keep the label for a while. John loves the outdoors and being in the woods but it's the kind with lots of trees and a few deer not the kind that requires a medical team (although they are great). I am confident he will get out of it as soon as he is able!
That is wonderful news for the start of 2011! Hang in there John! Prayers continue for you and your family.

We were in New York for Christmas, got stuck in the blizzard, and just got home last night. We got the news Tuesday morning and have been praying for John David ever since. I'll get to the Austin blood center and donate as soon as I can. If there is anything you guys need, please let us know.
ReplyDeleteThat's wonderful news!!! ICU nurses are the BEST! I'm an eternal optimist and believer in the power of prayer and dreams. Night before last I dreamed I got a text from John David which said "Don't worry, I'll be okay". Had to check my phone it seemed so real. Your family continues to be in our prayers. love ya lots, Mary

ReplyDeleteTo John....my fellow Law Enforcement Brother...you remain in my thoughts and prayers, along with your family. Sis, your awesome, and I thank you! We all thank you! Continue to rest and heal my brother....Never underestimate the power of prayer....never loose your faith.......Lynn.
